Why you should do hard stuff

Doing hard stuff doesn’t sound very fun. But I personally don’t believe hard and fun have to be mutually exclusive.

In my last post, I made the cold mountain stream analogy. Imagine yourself on your death bed right now. As you reflect on the life you lived, did you jump in the cold mountain streams? Or did you watch from the bank while others did?

I used to avoid exercise at all costs. Then I decided I would fight through it. After the initial soreness of a “breaking in” period I got addicted. I love it now. It’s exhilarating, and there’s a great feeling I get after I run. I get a great sense of accomplishment.

How would you feel if you took a week off of work and sat in front of the TV? How would you reflect on that week on your deathbed?

How would you feel is you took a week off of work and did crazy and memorable things everyday that week? How’s that reflection look from your deathbed?

Take on challenges and get out of your comfort zone. You’ll often find that:

A) It wasn’t really that scary or hard after all
B) The reward is great

Turn off reality TV and do something scary!

  1. The harder something is, the more rewarding it is. I bet that you do things all the time that you don't consider hard, that someone else perceives as completely out of their comfort zone and very difficult. LIFE is hard, if you're really living it. LIVING is worth the effort. Think of what you gain along the way!
Living vicariously through reality tv creates a false sense of accomplishment. LIVE your reality. Don't watch The Bachelor, go date! Get out there and live! It's said that your whole life flashes before your eyes on your deathbed, like a movie. Don't let it be "digitally remastered to fit your screen"... make it EPIC.

  2. Nelson,

I just stumbled onto your blog from Russ's Relationship blog. I like your style and I, too, think and communicate with metaphors - When is your next one - it's already Feb. 2009. Great writing and very thought provoking.
